The Perks of Accepting Inevitability and Dimples

Just a quick, random, short story

He said he wanted to 'talk'. We all know what that means.

I took a deep breath, and walked to the table we always met at when we went to the coffee shop. I sent him a quick text to tell him I was there, and sat down.

I pulled out the book I was reading, The Perks of Being a Wallflower. One thing that Stephan Chbosky said was, "Things change. And friends leave. Life doesn't stop for anybody." I had to keep telling myself that was true.

Devin was on his way to break up with me. There was no question about it. This would just be a thing that was changing. If it was meant to be, there's really nothing I can do to stop it, but if it wasn't meant to be, there's absolutely nothing I could do to change it.

I started humming Young and Beautiful by Lana Del Ray just before I heard steps behind me. A guy that I didn't know sat down right where Devin would be.

"Excuse me. I'm waiting for my boyfriend, and he's going to be sitting right there, so if you could-"

"Oh shut up. I know. I'm friends with Devin. And I know he's on his way. Blah blah blah." he chuckled. I didn't like this stranger.

"Well I'd appreciate if you could leave that seat open for him, I'm not really in the mood for com-"

"Like I said, shut up. You think Devin is going to break up with you right?" he leaned forward and looked at my lips then my eyes.

I leaned back, and blinked uncomfortably, "Do you always cut people off? And it's really none of your bus-"

"Shhh. Yes, I usually cut strangers off. And you can tell me," he winked.

"You must not have many friends. And nah. I'm fine."

"I think we could be friends."

"Oh, I highly doubt that." I said in my bitchiest tone possible and folded my arms across my chest.

He scoffed, "Fine. I see how it is, Amber."

"How do you know my-"

"Like I said, I know Devin. And he talks about you way too much. Anyways, you're right. He's on his way to break up with you. Don't say I didn't warn ya." he winked once again, "My name is Brad, and I'm here to be your hero." he said flawlessly as if this was a normal thing he said, "Once it happens, come over and see me. I'll be sitting over there." he pointed at a table to the left.

"I think I'm good. Why would I want to see you? I don't even know you." I pointed out.

Brad's eyes flicked to my book as he stood up, "Maybe it's sad that these are now memories. And maybe it's not sad," he said quoting Stephan's words. He shook his head, "Listen, all I'm saying is, either way you shouldn't be alone after it happens. You may be super sad, it which case, I'd like to comfort you. Because from what I've heard from Devin you seem like a really cool and unique person. You don't deserve his bullshit," he said sincerely, "But, you may not be sad. This is just going to be a mere memory one day, and I think you're intelligent enough to know that there's no use crying over it." he took a breath, "So, either way, promise you'll come over to me afterwards?"

I looked him over. His eyebrows furrowed above his hazel eyes, while he half smiled, waiting for my response. He looked like the modern day Superman, if Superman was tan with hazel eyes. Maybe I should go and hang out with him after... I'll be single.

"Yea. I promise." I told him.

His half smile turned into a huge goofy grin, "Thank you, Amber," his dimples were distracting. He started walking towards his table and sat down. I looked over at him and he winked.

Minutes later, Devin was there. He sat down, and swept some of his blond hair out of his eyes. His brown eyes were focused on the table, avoiding mine.

"Hey Am, like I said I need to talk to you. I really think-"

I cut him off, "Nah listen, Dev. I understand. You're hear to dump me, huh?"

His eyes widened and he sat up straight and let out a huge sigh, "Yea. I just don't think this is working."

I laughed, "Alright, that's cool." I stood up and he looked at me with confusion.

"Where are you going" he asked.

"It's over. What's the point in sitting around? You got what you came for." as I said it, I realized something. I was wearing his necklace. I reached up and started to take it off.

"No, Am, you can keep it." he said.

"My name is Amber, not Am. And I don't want it." I said as I dropped it in front of him. I started walking away.

"Wait, where are you going?"

"Oh, I've got a date," I said and pointed to Brad.

"Brad? What the hell man?" Devin said, temper rising.

Brad got up and walked over, "Oh hey Devin. Well I was aware of you breaking up with Miss Blue Eyes over here, so I swept in. We're going to go get ice cream and talk about our feelings," he said and laughed.

Devin stared at him with an open mouth. "But Am, I wasn't done talking to you. Maybe we could work things out," he said as his eyes flicked over to Brad.

I laughed sarcastically, "I'm good! Thanks, though!"

He looked down and up to my eyes, and made a face, "Well I'll see you around," he said and stood up and started walking away.

"Hey, Devin?" I called after him.

He turned around with a hopeful look in his eyes, "Yea?" he asked.

"Don't count on it." I said and looked at Brad and he shrugged his shoulders to Devin. Devin shook his head and I watched him walk to his car and get in. It wasn't until he drove away that I turned to Brad.

"I actually feel great. It wasn't meant to be." I informed him.

He chuckled and reached down to tuck some of my red hair behind my ear, "So you think we can be friends now?"

I looked up at him and then to the side and smiled, "Yea, sure." I said, and grabbed his hand.

One boy to the next, smooth Amber, I told myself as I walked to the ice cream shop, hand in hand with my modern day Superman.

About Alura Emma Sophia

You could say I have an attitude, but overall I am a pretty chill girl. I'm a teenage girl with a lot of opinions, and lots of lessons I've learned. I've got a whole lot of love in my heart, and I am never going to claim to be perfect. I am exactly who I am meant to be, but that doesn't mean I'm not flawed. My flaws make me who I am. I've been through a lot, and just want to live life peacefully. Good vibes, the whole shpeel, but in the life of teenager, like me, complete and utter peace isn't always possible.
